Sky in Europe

Hello,

I would like to know why you can get Sky Stream in ROI (EU) and Sky Showtime in Spain (EU) but not Sky Stream

Re: Sky in Europe

Sky does not operate a Pay TV service in Spain, Sky Showtime is a joint venture between Comcast and Paramount which operates outside of Sky markets.

Sky showtime is a joint venture between sky's parent company Comcast and Paramount.

As with any major company, they may offer products in one consumer market and other products in another.

Various reasons may apply for this

- commercial

- possible market share (maybe sky feel they could not get enough market share to make it worthwhile/profitable)

- regulatory

- barriers to entry etc etc

- marketing/advertising expenditure

Please note this is mostly customer to customer forum.

@Alex+j+o

Showtime is specifically targeted at European markets where Sky Group isn't already a licenced and regulated broadcaster*: there's typically a much lower legal, technical and national regulatory requirement for a Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) service compared to 'broadcasting' (which Stream falls under despite being online-only).

(Showtime) will ultimately be available to consumers in Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.

hi @Alex+j+o

I think you need to understand the the historic TV broadcasting set up where each territory (mainly 1 or just a few countries) has it's own broadcasting rights.

This was very easy to control before the launch of Satellites and then relied on encryption with Satellite transmission

Companies have rights for specific territories which means that producers/distributors could gain different revenues from each one (and maximise revenues this way).

Hence in the UK you can get SKY but not, say,  Canal+ which has the rights to France (& a couple of other countries)

Some the owners do own companies within multiple territories but often they are usually  independent of each other adhering to the broadcasting rights & rules of each territory

SKY as we know it in the UK & Ireland carries its own channels & other channels targetted specifically in the UK & Ireland. Other SKY companies cover Germany & Italy etc.

I don't know the full ins & outs but when the UK was part of the EU then subscribers in the UK could watch whilst on holiday in the EU but this ceased after Brexit

These are different to the global streaming services that have started in the last decade or so where the Service may stream to many different countries

Sky Glass and Sky Stream are available in Ireland to match the UK market, as a majority of UK channels are available in Ireland too.

Sky Stream and Sky Showtime are two completely seperate things altogether.
